Wrong-Way Collision on Loop 202 in Tempe Leaves Two Dead, DPS Says

TEMPE, Ariz. — Two people are dead after a wrong-way collision on Loop 202 in Tempe early Sunday morning, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

DPS troopers responded at about 12:40 a.m. on Nov. 8 to the eastbound lanes of the freeway near Scottsdale Road, where two vehicles collided head-on. Each driver was the only occupant of their vehicle, and both were pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

Investigators have not yet determined whether impairment was a factor in the crash. The case remains under investigation, and DPS has not released the names of the drivers pending notification of family.

The stretch of Loop 202 near Scottsdale Road is a busy commuter corridor linking Tempe with Scottsdale and the East Valley, and wrong-way crashes on the region's freeways have been a persistent safety concern. State and local agencies have in recent years explored countermeasures including enhanced wrong-way detection systems and signage at interchange ramps.

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact DPS. The department said additional details will be released as the investigation proceeds.
