Valley Metro proposes redesigning 59 bus routes across Maricopa County
The agency is seeking public feedback on 86 proposed changes, including more frequent weekday and weekend service. Riders can comment on the plans through Nov. 30; final recommendations are expected next spring.
Valley Metro is asking riders to weigh in on 86 proposed changes affecting 59 bus routes across Maricopa County, a redesign intended to increase service frequency and better match the region’s travel patterns.
The proposals would nearly double the number of weekday routes with buses arriving every 15 minutes or less. Some routes could also get more frequent weekend trips, Sunday service or later evening runs. Other routes might be extended, combined or adjusted to connect riders with more destinations.
The agency says it developed the plan using community feedback, ridership data and travel patterns. Valley Metro’s regional network has 97 bus routes and carries nearly 30 million passenger trips each year.
“We think that a system that responds to what people want and what people need will generate more ridership,” said Michael Eshleman, the agency’s deputy chief of service planning. He said riders have raised concerns that weekend service is not meeting their needs.
Some proposed changes could reduce or eliminate service on routes with low ridership. Valley Metro says it will identify alternative service options where possible.
The plan is not final. Riders can review the proposals and share how changes could affect their trips through Nov. 30 at https://valleymetro.org/projects/bus-network-redesign. The agency is also holding in-person and virtual outreach events; the schedule is available on its project page.
Valley Metro expects to make final recommendations in spring 2027. If approved, changes would be introduced in phases beginning in fall 2027.
