Tucson man faces federal charges after American Airlines flight diversion
A 67-year-old Tucson man has been indicted on federal charges stemming from an incident aboard an American Airlines flight that was diverted to Baltimore, federal prosecutors said Tuesday, Oct. 13. Arthur Layne Lundeen is charged with interfering with flight crew members and assaulting another person, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Maryland. The indictment alleges he struck a passenger, ignored flight attendants’ instructions and directed abusive language, including racial slurs, at the crew. Lundeen was traveling on Flight 618 from Dallas-Fort Worth to Newark, New Jersey, on Sept. 3 when the plane was diverted to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. Other passengers helped flight attendants restrain him with duct tape and zip ties, and images of the restraint circulated widely online. Lundeen was initially booked on state misdemeanor charges and released on his own recognizance. The federal charges are allegations; he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in federal prison for interfering with the flight crew and up to one year for the assault charge. Lundeen previously worked as a real estate agent with Tucson-based Long Realty Co., which said it had ended its relationship with him and described the reported conduct as inconsistent with its standards.
