North Phoenix clinic estimates hail damage could top $300,000 as patients are redirected
Baseball-sized hail and heavy rain damaged Sun Pain Management near 19th and Peoria avenues, flooding the building and forcing its temporary closure. The clinic is directing patients to other locations or virtual visits while it works on repairs and cleanup.
A hailstorm that struck Phoenix on Wednesday, Oct. 21, punched holes in the roof of Sun Pain Management in north Phoenix, sending water through the building and forcing the clinic to close temporarily, staff said.
The clinic is near 19th Avenue and Peoria Avenue. Dr. David Towns said baseball-sized hail caused extensive damage in about 15 minutes, with water pouring through ceilings across the facility. Ceiling tiles fell onto equipment and patients, he said, and roughly an inch of water covered the floor.
Towns said staff used towels and bedsheets to mop up the water. Hail also dented vehicles parked outside and damaged a car’s windshield and roof.
The clinic’s initial estimate for roof repairs is about $300,000, Towns said. That figure does not include damage to air-conditioning units, medical equipment or the building’s interior. Staff are working to process claims, dry out the facility and make it safe and clean before reopening.
Until then, patients are being directed to the clinic’s other locations or offered virtual appointments. Towns said he hopes to resume in-person care as soon as possible.
