Helicopter crew rescues four stranded on car at Wet Beaver Creek crossing

Four people were rescued from the roof of a car swept downstream by flash flooding Thursday at a Wet Beaver Creek crossing in Yavapai County, authorities said.

Yavapai County sheriff’s deputies were called around 3:15 p.m. to a riverbed near Dragonshead and Culpepper Ranch roads after reports that people were stranded in rapidly rising water. Deputies found the vehicle about 150 feet downstream from where it had been caught in strong currents, with all four people on its roof.

Deputies relayed the group’s GPS coordinates to an Arizona Department of Public Safety Ranger helicopter, which extracted them from the car.

The Yavapai County rescue came amid flooding elsewhere in Arizona. On Thursday night, 30 people were rescued from homes in the Navajo Nation community of Dennehotso, in Apache County, and several elders were evacuated after becoming stranded.
