Eloy mother of eight dies after two trains converge during morning run
Thelma Candelaria, 47, was running near Sunshine Boulevard and Frontier Street when a train struck her Thursday morning. Her daughter says Candelaria was recording another train and did not see the one approaching on a separate track.
Thelma Candelaria, a 47-year-old Eloy mother of eight, was killed Thursday morning when a train struck her as she ran near Sunshine Boulevard and Frontier Street, her family said.
Her daughter, Alaisha Candelaria, used videos her mother had been recording and footage from a nearby surveillance camera to piece together the sequence of events. She said her mother was filming one train when another approached on a separate track from the opposite direction.
Alaisha said her mother did not see the second train. She was wearing noise-canceling headphones, and its sound may have been masked by the train she was recording, her daughter said.
“She was singing along to Jessie Reyes, which is her favorite artist. She was laughing,” Alaisha said, describing the videos from the run.
Eloy police said both trains sounded their horns. The train that hit Candelaria applied its emergency brake but could not avoid the collision. She was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The department’s vehicular crimes unit is investigating.
A caregiver, Candelaria had been baptized less than a week before her death, her family said. Alaisha described her mother’s death as an accident and said the family is facing funeral costs while also caring for Candelaria’s children.
“People continuously, they’ve always told me my whole life, ‘You are so, so lucky to have the mother that you have,’” Alaisha said. “She was an angel.” The family has set up a fundraiser to help with expenses.
