Sixers erase 29-point deficit to defeat Cavaliers, 114-106

The Philadelphia 76ers overcame a 29-point deficit to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 114-106 in their home opener Thursday, turning a ragged first half into a dramatic win at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

Tyrese Maxey scored 32 points and had six assists for Philadelphia. Joel Embiid added 24 points, Jaylen Brown scored 21 and LeBron James had 17. Cleveland’s Donovan Mitchell also finished with 32.

The Sixers struggled early with turnovers and missed shots. They gave the ball away six times in the opening six minutes, and Mitchell’s buzzer-beating three put Cleveland ahead 35-18 after the first quarter. The Cavaliers built their lead to 29 in the second, while Philadelphia’s early mistakes helped fuel Cleveland’s offense.

Philadelphia’s turnaround began with a 16-0 run spanning the end of the second quarter and start of the third. The Sixers attacked the basket and tightened their defense, forcing Cleveland into turnovers and creating chances in transition. Maxey helped cut the deficit to 84-82 with a layup, and the Sixers eventually moved in front when Embiid hit a mid-range jumper to make it 96-95.

Brown then scored three consecutive baskets to extend Philadelphia’s lead to 102-95. The Sixers held on from there, completing a comeback that followed a difficult start for the home crowd.

The win moved Philadelphia to 2-0. The Sixers are scheduled to host Milwaukee on Saturday and Detroit on Sunday.
