Temple reviews reported rape at University Village apartment

Temple University is investigating a reported rape at University Village Apartments on North 10th Street, about two blocks from campus police and within the university’s patrol boundary.

The university’s crime log says the alleged assault occurred at 2:30 a.m. Saturday inside the apartment building. No charges have been filed, and Temple has not said how long its investigation may take.

A university spokesperson said Temple is taking the report seriously and providing support, including access to a victim advocate. The spokesperson said the matter is being handled under the Student Conduct Code because it involved a private, off-campus residence. That process is separate from any law enforcement investigation, the university said.

Temple said that after reviewing the information, it did not determine there was an imminent risk to the university community. The university did not provide details about the allegations.

LaQuisha Anthony of the Philadelphia Center Against Sexual Violence said the report comes during the period from August through November, which she described as a time when sexual assaults have historically increased on college campuses.

The university’s response comes as Temple begins a broader review of its sexual misconduct policies. On Oct. 3, it announced a Sexual Assault Advisory Group made up of students, faculty and staff to examine how the university supports victims and responds to reports. Temple formed the group following national attention to sexual assault allegations at Cornell University.
