PhilaPort expansion plan calls for $837 million and 6,000 more jobs
Gov. Josh Shapiro announced $837 million in public and private investment to expand the Port of Philadelphia. The plan is expected to increase port-related jobs from 8,000 to 14,000.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro announced an $837 million public-private investment to expand the Port of Philadelphia, a project he said would increase the number of jobs at the port from 8,000 to 14,000.
The announcement was made Tuesday, Oct. 13, at PhilaPort’s Southport Auto Terminal in Philadelphia. Rich Lazer, PhilaPort’s CEO and executive director, joined Shapiro at the event.
The projected increase would add 6,000 jobs, a 75% rise over the current total. The expansion is intended to increase the port’s capacity, though details about the projects included in the investment and the division between public and private funding were not provided in the announcement.
The port is a major regional employment and transportation hub. The proposed investment and job growth could have consequences for workers and nearby communities as the expansion moves forward.
