Penn Wood students protest as district pauses school sports over conduct allegations
The William Penn School District has suspended athletics at Penn Wood High School and Middle School while an outside investigator examines an unspecified allegation involving student-athletes. Students protested outside the high school in Lansdowne, and the district says no conclusions have been reached.
The William Penn School District suspended all athletics at Penn Wood High School and Penn Wood Middle School on Thursday, Oct. 15, while an outside investigator reviews an allegation involving student-athletes and the schools’ athletic culture and climate.
The district has not publicly described the alleged conduct. In a statement, it said the information it received, if proven by a preponderance of the evidence, would violate school board policies. “No conclusions have been reached,” the district said.
Penn Wood High School students protested outside the school at 100 Green Ave. in Lansdowne on Friday. The district said it recognizes students’ right to protest peacefully and that it is prioritizing safety while responding. It also plans to offer student-athletes a climate survey to share their experiences.
The district said the suspension is not intended to be permanent, while acknowledging that the pause affects students, families, coaches and supporters. It described athletics as an opportunity for students to build connections, grow and work as a team, and said it is committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment.
William Penn serves about 4,500 students in Aldan, Colwyn, Darby, East Lansdowne, Lansdowne and Yeadon. The district has faced financial pressures: in 2025, it warned that a budget crisis could force cuts to arts and athletics programs.
The suspension comes after nearby Cheltenham School District canceled its 2026 football season following two alleged locker-room hazing incidents in 2025. Four former coaches and six student players were charged after a grand jury investigation. The William Penn district has not said whether its investigation concerns hazing or any similar conduct.
