Marsha’s to close South Street bar after brief run as Philly’s queer women’s sports hub
Marsha’s, which opened last summer in Queen Village as Philadelphia’s first queer women’s sports bar, says this weekend will be its last. Its owners thanked supporters and called for another women-, queer- or BIPOC-owned business to fill the gap.
Marsha’s, a South Street bar that billed itself as Philadelphia’s first queer women’s sports bar, will close permanently after this weekend, its owners announced Thursday.
The business opened last summer in the city’s Queen Village neighborhood, drawing attention for putting women’s sports on its big screens. The owners did not give a reason for the closure.
In a social media post, they thanked customers and supporters, saying they had loved serving the community. They also said Philadelphia needs more businesses owned by women, queer people and people of color, and expressed hope that someone would take over the space and help fill the void.
The closing marks the loss of a dedicated gathering place for fans of women’s sports and LGBTQ+ community members in the neighborhood.
