Gun standoff on Fox Chase SEPTA bus prompts Oxford Avenue closures
Police and SWAT teams responded early Monday after a man with a handgun refused to leave a SEPTA bus in Fox Chase. The man reportedly told officers he had killed two people, but authorities have not linked the standoff to a separate double homicide under investigation in East Mount Airy.
Police shut down streets around the 7900 block of Oxford Avenue in Philadelphia’s Fox Chase section early Monday after a man with a handgun refused to get off a SEPTA bus, prompting a barricade response involving SWAT officers.
Officers were called to the area around 5 a.m. and found the man at the rear of the bus, police said. The man allegedly told police he had just killed two people. Officials said no one else was on the bus.
The reported claim came as police investigated the shooting deaths of two women found with gunshot wounds to the head after firefighters responded to a house fire in East Mount Airy early Monday. Authorities have not connected the two incidents.
Police had closed nearby streets as the standoff continued. Officials had not announced the man’s identity, whether anyone had been arrested, or further details about the investigation.
