Fire heavily damages Lulu Ross Elementary in Milford; class plans pending
A three-hour fire early Sunday damaged classrooms, the library and offices at Lulu M. Ross Elementary School in Milford, Delaware. The cause is under investigation, and the school district has not yet said how classes will be affected.
A fire that broke out before dawn Sunday caused significant damage to Lulu M. Ross Elementary School in Milford, including its library, front offices and classrooms, according to Milford School District officials.
First responders were alerted by a fire alarm at about 4:15 a.m. Crews found several areas burning along the north end of the school’s Kent Hallway. The flames spread to the lobby and front office, and heavily damaged classrooms along both the Kent and New Castle hallways, the district said. Firefighters battled the blaze for about three hours.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The district has not announced how the damage will affect upcoming classes, leaving families and staff awaiting information about the school’s next steps.
Delaware Education Secretary Cindy Marten said the state Department of Education is working with district leaders to address immediate needs and help plan for students to continue learning. In a statement, Marten emphasized that students and staff need support and a sense of connection to their school community during the disruption.
The district thanked community members who have offered help and said it expects Milford residents to support the school community as it responds to the damage.
