Suspicious envelope prompts evacuation of Oklahoma State Election Board office
An envelope containing a white powder prompted the evacuation of the Oklahoma State Election Board office in the Capitol complex on Tuesday morning, Oct. 13, 2026. Authorities later determined the substance was non-hazardous, and the complex was cleared to reopen Wednesday. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s Capitol Patrol Division responded to the report and coordinated with state and federal partners. The Oklahoma City Fire Department and Oklahoma National Guard also assisted, according to State Election Board Secretary Paul Ziriax. No Election Board staff members were harmed. Ziriax said the incident would not affect the state’s ability to conduct elections, adding that election officials remained committed to safe and secure elections. The complex was expected to resume normal operations Wednesday. Authorities said they would continue working with state and federal partners on the incident but did not provide further details about the envelope or its sender.
