MTSU to host Tennessee governor forum as early voting opens
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Tennessee voters will have a chance to hear from three gubernatorial candidates during a live forum at Middle Tennessee State University on Tuesday, Oct. 27, two weeks before Election Day. Democratic nominee Jerri Green, a Memphis City Council member, and independent candidates David Hatley and Lauren Pinkston have agreed to participate in the Tennessee Press Association forum, which is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. CDT. Republican nominee and U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn was also invited; her attendance has not been confirmed. The forum will be held in a studio setting and livestreamed by an MTSU student video production team and newspapers belonging to the press association. It is the only nonpartisan gubernatorial forum scheduled for the election, according to the event organizers. “Members of the press have a duty and public service to inform Tennesseans about government and public affairs, including elections,” association President David Gould said. He noted that this is the first time in eight years voters will elect a new governor and said the public should hear from major candidates in an open forum. Early voting begins Oct. 14. Election Day is Nov. 3.
