Distracted driver rear-ends Nashville pedal tavern, injuring nine

Nine passengers were injured Thursday night when a westbound Toyota RAV4 rear-ended a pedal tavern in downtown Nashville, police said. The crash happened around 8:30 p.m. near 1033 Demonbreun Street, close to 11th Avenue.

Metro Nashville police said nine of the tavern’s 12 passengers were hurt, with at least two seriously injured. Six patients were transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. A hospital spokesperson said five of those patients were stable and one was in critical condition.

The RAV4 driver and the pedal tavern’s driver were not injured. The RAV4 driver told police he had been distracted, but investigators had not determined what diverted his attention, police spokesperson Kris Mumford said.

Mumford said the passengers were an “older crowd” and that police did not yet know where they were from. She said she was not aware of a previous crash involving a pedal tavern, but police would investigate and speak with the driver.

Police and Nashville Fire crews responded to the scene. Authorities expected the area to remain closed for several hours while the investigation continued.
