Milwaukee police arrested a 13-year-old after an incident involving an 8-year-old student at Ralph H. Metcalfe School on Thursday, Oct. 15, police said. The incident happened around noon at the school near 34th Street and North Avenue.

Police said the younger student was beaten and taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

In a message to families and staff, Principal Melinda Gladney gave a different account of how the injury occurred. She said a student needed medical attention after hitting their head on a door frame while trying to enter a classroom and being stopped by another student. The school called paramedics, she said, but did not share the student’s condition, citing student privacy laws.

Gladney said the school was investigating and would take disciplinary action under Milwaukee Public Schools’ student conduct code. She encouraged students affected by the incident to contact the school for support from its counseling, nursing, psychology or social-work staff.
