Milwaukee cathedral parishioners pray for Pope Leo after cancer diagnosis
Worshippers gathered at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist on Tuesday after the Vatican announced Pope Leo XIV had lung cancer. The Vatican said doctors removed a lung nodule and the lower lobe, but had not outlined next steps for treatment.
MILWAUKEE — Parishioners at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist prayed for Pope Leo XIV on Tuesday after the Vatican announced that testing confirmed he has lung cancer.
The diagnosis followed surgery to remove a nodule from the pope’s lung. The Vatican said doctors also removed the lung’s lower lobe. It had not announced a treatment plan, including whether chemotherapy or other therapies were being considered, and said it expected to provide an update Wednesday morning.
During Tuesday’s Mass, a priest led a prayer for the pope. Jack Tarpey, who attended the service, said he was praying for Leo and for the medical team caring for him.
The cathedral’s rector and pastor, the Rev. Edward Sanchez, said the church prays for the pope daily. He said Milwaukee’s Catholic community was concerned but drawing hope from Leo’s confidence and from people joining in prayer.
Sanchez said the church would stand behind the pope as he faces what could be a lengthy recovery. Tarpey offered a message of support, saying Milwaukeeans—and Catholics beyond the city—were praying for him.
