Miami-Dade shooting survivor stable as friends question denied protection request
Dalianis Lazo, 41, is stable and responding to some commands after being shot by her ex-boyfriend in southwest Miami-Dade, friends said. Court records cited in the report show a judge denied her August request to extend a protection order after finding insufficient evidence of stalking or domestic violence.
Dalianis Lazo, a 41-year-old woman who was shot by her ex-boyfriend at a southwest Miami-Dade home, is in stable condition and responding to some commands from nurses, friends who visited her at Jackson South Hospital said Saturday.
The shooting happened Thursday morning after a verbal dispute at a home on Southwest 148th Street, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office. Deputies said Ivan Granado shot Lazo and then shot himself. Granado died at the scene, and Lazo was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Lazo’s friends said they knew she was separating from Granado and had felt threatened. A judge had initially ordered Granado to stay away from her and extended the order several times. In August, Lazo asked the court to extend the protection again, saying she feared for her safety and worried the situation could escalate. The judge denied the request, finding there was not evidence of stalking or domestic violence, according to court records.
“Something failed,” said Alejandro Vergara, one of Lazo’s friends, who questioned how her efforts to seek protection did not prevent the shooting. Luis Alejandro Rodriguez, a friend since childhood, described Lazo as independent and consistently happy.
Authorities said Lazo is six to eight weeks pregnant. Her friends said they did not know of any update about the pregnancy. She remains under treatment at Jackson South, and the sheriff’s office investigation is active.
