Broward officials clash over sheriff’s $870 million budget and a costly training center
Broward County commissioners are seeking an audit of how Sheriff Gregory Tony spends his $870 million budget, while Tony says he is protecting an active state investigation. The dispute escalated online over the weekend, with County Mayor Mark Bogan planning a visit to the sheriff’s headquarters that Tony says is unauthorized.
A months-long dispute over Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony’s spending escalated over the weekend, as county commissioners questioned the rising cost of a sheriff’s office training facility and County Mayor Mark Bogan announced plans to visit the agency’s headquarters.
Commissioners say the training center is projected to cost more than $40 million above its original estimate. Bogan said commissioners are directing county auditors to examine how Tony is spending the sheriff’s $870 million budget.
Tony, in videos posted to social media, pointed to a state investigation involving commissioners and said he was acting to protect an active criminal probe. “The statewide investigation is not a political tactic by the Sheriff,” he said, adding that it required “respect and caution.”
Bogan planned to visit the Broward Sheriff’s Office headquarters on Monday, Oct. 12. Tony called the visit unauthorized and said he would not allow the mayor inside.
The dispute puts public scrutiny on both the cost of major sheriff’s office projects and the oversight of a substantial county budget, while the officials’ competing claims about an ongoing investigation add a legal dimension to their political clash.
