Freshman QB Ryan Hopkins throws for 241 yards and 3 TDs as Wisconsin beats Rutgers 31-10 to become bowl eligible

MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin turned to a true freshman at quarterback on Saturday and found exactly what it needed.

Ryan Hopkins, making his collegiate debut as the starting quarterback in place of Colton Joseph, completed 18 of 24 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Badgers to a 31-10 victory over Rutgers at Camp Randall Stadium. The win was Wisconsin's sixth of the season, making the Badgers officially bowl eligible.

Hopkins wasted little time making an impact. On the game's opening drive, he connected with wide receiver Eugene Hilton Jr. for a 21-yard touchdown to put Wisconsin ahead first in the first quarter.

Rutgers answered with a 45-yard field goal on its next possession, and Wisconsin's Gavin Lahm countered with a 51-yard field goal midway through the second quarter. The Scarlet Knights then found the end zone when AJ Surace hit Dyzier Carter for a 30-yard touchdown, tying the game at 10.

Hopkins guided the Badgers downfield to set up Lahm for another field goal before halftime, sending Wisconsin into the locker room with a 13-10 lead.

The second half belonged entirely to the Badgers. Wisconsin's offense found its rhythm and the defense shut out Rutgers the rest of the way, scoring 18 unanswered points. Hopkins found a wide-open Ryan Schwendeman in the third quarter, then connected with tight end Jacob Harris for a 66-yard touchdown at the start of the fourth quarter to seal the outcome.

The victory was a strong bounce-back for Wisconsin, which was coming off its worst loss of the season — a 30-0 shutout at Iowa the previous week. The Badgers returned home to Madison and delivered a performance that keeps their postseason hopes alive.

Wisconsin will next hit the road to face Maryland (3-6) on Saturday in College Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. Central Time.
