MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin volleyball will be without senior right-side hitter Grace Egan for the immediate future as she rehabilitates a back injury sustained after the Badgers’ five-set match against Florida earlier this month. Egan did not play in Wisconsin’s recent matches and did not travel with the team for its weekend road trip to Texas. She addressed her absence in a social media post, saying she experienced a painful setback after the Florida match and met with doctors at the University of Wisconsin. “After a stressful day I was able to meet with the doctors at UW and was reassured that they are very optimistic about my recovery,” Egan wrote. Egan produced a season-high 17 kills against Florida, helping lead Wisconsin’s offense in the five-set match. She said her current focus is on healing rather than targeting a specific return date. “I’m not ready to put an exact date on my return just yet, but I’m working every day towards getting back on the court as soon as possible,” Egan wrote. “I will be back and I’m counting down the days.” Coach Kelly Sheffield said Egan should be the person to decide when and how details about her health are shared publicly. He noted that some player-availability updates belong with the coaching staff, while other situations should be communicated directly by the athlete. The sixth-ranked Badgers are scheduled to return to the UW Field House on Thursday, Sept. 17, for a 7 p.m. match against in-state rival Marquette. Egan’s recovery leaves Wisconsin without one of its key offensive contributors as the team continues its season.
