Obama backs Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley for Wisconsin governor
Former President Barack Obama endorsed Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley for Wisconsin governor in a video posted to social media Thursday, weighing into a competitive November race against Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany. Obama praised Crowley’s record and personal story, saying the candidate had overcome adversity and focused his work on bringing people together. He also pointed to Crowley’s experience as a community organizer and county executive, where Obama said he had helped create jobs and balance budgets. Crowley grew up on Milwaukee’s North Side in a family affected by addiction and mental health challenges. He and his mother faced housing instability and eviction during his childhood. He later worked as a community organizer and an aide to former U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold before winning a seat in the Wisconsin Assembly. In 2020, he was elected Milwaukee County executive, becoming the first Black person to hold the office. If Crowley wins, he would be Wisconsin’s first Black governor and the fourth Black governor elected in U.S. history. Obama, the first Black U.S. president, carried Wisconsin in both the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections, victories that underscored the state’s importance in national contests. Obama’s endorsement comes after President Donald Trump backed Tiffany during the Republican primary in January. Trump reiterated his support for Tiffany on Wednesday while announcing nearly $18 million in disaster aid for Wisconsin, according to the announcement cited in the campaign coverage. Crowley called Obama’s backing an honor and said the former president represented a model of leadership focused on improving everyday life. Obama urged voters to support Crowley, saying he would work to make Wisconsin more affordable, including costs for fuel and health care.
