NTSB report details fuel-management sequence before Tiffany’s emergency lake landing
A preliminary NTSB report says the pilot of the plane carrying Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Tom Tiffany attributed its loss of power to a delayed fuel-tank change and an electric boost pump that was not switched on. Tiffany and the pilot escaped the Beech K35 after it landed in a lake near Wausau on Sept. 12.
A pilot told a mechanic that a delayed fuel-tank switch and failure to turn on an electric fuel boost pump led to the loss of engine power before a plane carrying Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Tom Tiffany made an emergency landing in a lake near Wausau, according to a preliminary National Transportation Safety Board report released Oct. 14.
The pilot was approaching Wausau Downtown Airport at night on Sept. 12 after flying from La Crosse when he noticed the engine exhaust temperature was higher than normal. The report says he then switched fuel tanks, but the engine did not respond immediately. The pilot later told a mechanic that the power loss resulted from the delay in changing tanks and not activating the boost pump, according to the report.
The Beech K35 came down in a lake near the airport. The aircraft sustained significant damage to its fuselage, left wing, aileron and engine mount.
Tiffany and the pilot got out of the plane, swam to shallow water and called 911. Marathon County rescuers brought them to shore by boat. Both received stitches, and Tiffany stayed in the hospital overnight, the report said.
The NTSB also noted that the plane did not have shoulder harnesses, though they were not required for the aircraft. The report is preliminary; the details describe the pilot’s account and do not establish a final NTSB determination of cause.
