Madison council to consider move to end interim police monitor’s appointment
District 2 Alder Will Ochowicz introduced a resolution seeking to terminate Madison’s interim independent police monitor’s appointment. The proposal is slated for referral to the Common Council on Oct. 20 after two council members objected during its introduction.
MADISON, Wis. — District 2 Alder Will Ochowicz introduced a resolution Tuesday night seeking to end the appointment of Madison’s interim independent police monitor, setting up further consideration by the Common Council later this month.
The resolution is scheduled to be referred to the council on Oct. 20. Council Vice President Carmella Glenn and Alder Julia Matthews objected when Ochowicz brought it forward at the Oct. 6 meeting, according to the meeting account.
The measure says the council reviewed a memorandum dated Aug. 31 from several city agency heads, as well as an employment review of the monitor dated Oct. 2. The proposal’s introduction does not itself terminate the appointment; the council would need to take further action.
The dispute puts the monitor’s position before the council amid tensions over the office and its relationship with city officials. The available resolution details do not explain the agency heads’ concerns or the employment review’s findings, leaving those documents central to the council’s upcoming deliberations.
