SMELSER, Wis. — Two people died Saturday after a shooting outside a residence in the Town of Smelser, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office said. Grant County dispatchers received a 911 call shortly before 1:30 p.m. reporting two people with gunshot wounds outside a home south of Cuba City. Deputies found a man and a woman on the ground near a vehicle when they arrived. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency responders treated the man before taking him to Southwest Health in Platteville. He was later transported by ambulance to a Madison hospital, where he died from his injuries, authorities said. Investigators and the county coroner’s office remained at the scene Saturday afternoon. Officials had not released the victims’ names while they worked to notify relatives. Authorities said the two people knew each other and described the shooting as an isolated incident. They said there was no threat to the wider public. Additional information is expected as the investigation continues.
