Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper Bradley Ritger died Friday, Oct. 2, from injuries suffered when he fell from an Interstate 94 bridge near Elk Mound, officials said. He was 29.
Ritger was called to a traffic pursuit shortly before 5 a.m. Sept. 21. While deploying a tire-deflation device on a bridge west of the Dunn-Eau Claire county line, he moved toward a position of cover and fell several feet to the roadway below, according to the State Patrol. Responders performed CPR and other lifesaving measures at the scene before he was taken to a nearby medical facility.
Ritger joined the State Patrol as a member of its 67th Recruit Class and served in the northwest region, including the area around Dunn County, for nearly five years. He held certifications as a law-enforcement instructor, mobile field force team member and squad leader, and salvage vehicle inspector. Before joining the patrol, he worked for the Wisconsin Department of Corrections for three years.
The State Patrol described Ritger as a dedicated public servant known for his work ethic, professionalism and commitment to helping others. The agency and Wisconsin Department of Transportation said they were mourning his death and extended condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
A law enforcement memorial vehicle has been placed at the State Patrol’s Northwest Region Post in Eau Claire, where members of the public may leave cards, flowers or other condolences. Funeral arrangements are being made by Ritger’s family. Officials said they would not release additional information at this time and asked the public to respect the family’s privacy.
