ELK MOUND, Wis. — Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper Brad Ritger was severely injured early Monday after falling from an I-94 bridge during a pursuit in Dunn County, authorities said. The pursuit began at about 4:55 a.m. Sept. 21 after another trooper attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding and a related driving complaint. State Patrol said the vehicle had also fled from an officer earlier that evening. Ritger deployed a tire-deflation device on the bridge deck west of the Dunn County-Eau Claire County line. Afterward, he moved toward a position of cover and fell over the bridge onto 490th Avenue, several feet below. Emergency responders administered life-saving measures, including CPR, before taking Ritger to a nearby medical facility. He remained under treatment as of Tuesday, according to the State Patrol. The vehicle struck the tire-deflation device but continued down the interstate with flat tires before stopping on the median shoulder. Officers then conducted a high-risk traffic stop and arrested the driver. Authorities did not release the driver’s name or announce charges in the initial information. The interstate was closed for several hours Monday morning while emergency crews responded and investigators examined the scene. The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation, the Dunn County Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin State Patrol are investigating the incident. Ritger has served with the State Patrol for five years and is assigned to the agency’s Northwest Region, where he works in Dunn County.
