Threat call prompts police response at Deerfield Elementary; sheriff calls it a hoax
Dane County deputies responded Friday after a caller threatened gun violence at Deerfield Elementary School. Authorities said the threat was not credible, and students and staff returned to their day.
A threat of gun violence reported at Deerfield Elementary School on Friday, Oct. 23, prompted a response from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office and precautionary checks at nearby schools. The sheriff’s office later said the threat was not credible and characterized the incident as an apparent swatting call.
The call came from a man who made threats to the school, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies worked with school officials to secure the building, and students and staff were able to resume their day. Deputies remained in the area for safety, the office said.
The sheriff’s office said it takes school threats seriously and will investigate. It also warned that false emergency reports can frighten communities and divert responders from genuine emergencies.
