MCFARLAND, Wis. — A century-spanning fashion show will give local audiences a close-up look at how clothing changed from the 1500s through the 1920s while supporting the McFarland Historical Society. “370 Years of Historic Fashion” will be presented at McFarland High School at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20. Proceeds will benefit the Larson House Museum and Gardens. Local costume designer Dennis Schell created the collection, researching historical clothing and constructing each piece with attention to period accuracy. He spent about a year making the costumes, which represent several centuries of fashion history. Local models will wear the garments during the stage show and share historical information about the eras represented. The format is intended to connect the clothing to the people and events of the past, rather than presenting history only through photographs or written descriptions. “When someone can see these clothes up close, they can see the colors, they can feel the fabrics, they can get a feeling of what the past was really like,” Schell said. “It’s a lot better than seeing a picture in a book.
