Madison's Vision Zero Marks World Day of Remembrance with Burr Jones Park Display
Madison's Vision Zero initiative will install a public memorial at Burr Jones Park during the week of Nov. 9-15 to honor traffic crash victims, as Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway calls for safer streets and urges drivers to slow down and stay sober.
Madison's Vision Zero initiative will observe the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims with a public display at Burr Jones Park during the week of Nov. 9-15, joining communities worldwide in honoring people killed or seriously injured in traffic crashes.
The display will be installed along the mixed-use path near East Washington Avenue, placing the memorial in a high-visibility corridor where pedestrians and cyclists share space with vehicle traffic.
"Through Vision Zero Madison, we are working toward a future where no one has to experience the devastating loss of a loved one because of a traffic crash," Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway said. "One life lost is too many, and we all have a role to play in making Vision Zero a reality."
City officials used the occasion to urge drivers to slow down, yield to pedestrians, avoid distractions, drive sober and wear seat belts. Vision Zero officials echoed the mayor's message in a statement: "One life lost is too many. Every life matters. Together, we can make Madison's streets safer for everyone."
The city said it is prioritizing safer street design and transportation systems as part of its broader effort to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries. The Vision Zero approach typically involves redesigning roads to calm traffic, improving crosswalks and bike infrastructure, and setting lower speed limits in vulnerable areas.
The weeklong observance comes as Madison continues to grapple with traffic safety concerns. The World Day of Remembrance, recognized globally each November, honors the millions of people killed and injured on roads worldwide and draws attention to the preventable nature of most crashes.
Residents can visit the Burr Jones Park display throughout the week to pay their respects and learn more about the city's safety efforts.
