MADISON, Wis. — A 31-year-old man was arrested Thursday night after police said he tried to break into a free Narcan dispenser at the Social Justice Center and then assaulted the person who reported him. Madison police said officers were called to the center, 1202 Williams St., at about 9:15 p.m. The 911 caller reported that the man was attempting to force open the Narcan box, which is available to the public and provides the overdose-reversal medication at no cost. According to police, the man was unable to open the box. He then entered the building and assaulted the caller, police said. The man faces allegations of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and attempted battery. His name was not included in the information provided by police. The incident occurred as the Social Justice Center faces increased scrutiny from the city. Madison officials notified the center this week that the city plans to pursue a public nuisance action, citing problems reported at the property, particularly during nighttime hours. Police said there were 300 calls for service at the center between January 2025 and Aug. 27, 2026. Those calls resulted in 20 arrests on allegations including battery, disorderly conduct while armed and methamphetamine possession. The city’s proposed action and the police response reflect an ongoing dispute over safety and activity around the property, while the Narcan box remains a community resource intended to help prevent fatal overdoses.
