Jaylen Broomfield, 20, faces first-degree intentional homicide charges in the October 30 killing of Tavis Thurman on Calypso Road. A second man, Jayden Broomfield, also 20, was arrested on weapons charges and had his bond set at $2,000.

Judge Sets $1 Million Bond for Suspect in Fatal North Side Shooting

A Dane County judge set a $1 million bond Friday for a 20-year-old Madison man accused of fatally shooting another man on the city's north side late last month.

Jaylen Broomfield faces charges of first-degree intentional homicide and first-degree recklessly endangering safety in the death of Tavis Thurman, according to court and police records. Broomfield was arrested after officers executed a search warrant at an apartment on Brentwood Parkway.

As conditions of his release, Broomfield is barred from possessing any type of dangerous weapon and from contacting anyone involved in the case or their families.

The charges stem from an Oct. 30 incident in the 2300 block of Calypso Road, where officers responded around 8:15 p.m. after multiple people reported hearing gunshots. Police found Thurman inside a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers attempted life-saving measures, but Thurman died later at a hospital.

A second man, Jayden Broomfield, also 20, appeared in court Friday on separate charges. He was arrested for possession of a machine gun and faces a charge of receiving stolen property valued between $5,000 and $10,000, or a stolen firearm. His bond was set at $2,000, and he is subject to the same conditions as Jaylen Broomfield, including the weapons and contact restrictions.

Both men are scheduled to return to court on Nov. 30.

The shooting has drawn attention on the city's north side, where residents have raised concerns about gun violence in recent months. Community advocates have called for expanded violence-prevention programs and stronger support for neighborhoods affected by shootings.

Police have not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the shooting or whether the two men are related. The case remains under investigation.
