Special Olympics Wisconsin canceled its 2026 Fall Games on Friday because of worsening weather conditions expected across the state this weekend. The games had been scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the DeForest Athletic Complex. Organizers cited flood warnings in the DeForest area, a forecast calling for thunderstorms and possible severe weather Saturday, hazardous travel conditions and concerns that rain had made fields and facilities unsafe. The Fall Games committee said it made the decision after monitoring the forecast and consulting with people at the athletic complex. Safety was the top priority for athletes, spectators and staff, organizers said. “We know this news is incredibly difficult to receive,” the committee said in a statement. “We recognize the tremendous amount of work, commitment, and excitement that has gone into Fall Games, and we share in your disappointment.” The cancellation came as forecasters warned of heavy rainfall and flooding from Friday night into Saturday. The conditions posed risks not only at the DeForest venue but also for participants traveling from communities around Wisconsin. The event’s cancellation is a significant disappointment for athletes and families who had prepared for the annual competition, but organizers said unsafe travel and saturated grounds left little room to proceed responsibly.
