Fitchburg shooting victim was mistaken for another man, police say; suspect charged
A 21-year-old man who was shot on Post Road Sept. 3 had no connection to the person police say the shooter was seeking. Michael Worthey, 25, faces attempted homicide and other charges; his cash bond was set at $200,000.
A 21-year-old man shot in Fitchburg in September was apparently mistaken for someone else, police said, and a 25-year-old man has been charged in the case.
Fitchburg officers responded early Sept. 3 to a report of a gunshot victim in the 1400 block of Post Road. The victim was taken to a hospital and survived.
Investigators say Michael Worthey had argued with another man hours before the shooting at an apartment in the 2900 block of Fish Hatchery Road. Police allege Worthey pointed a gun at that man, who left. Worthey stayed in the area and waited for him to return, investigators believe.
When the 21-year-old victim drove through the parking lot, police believe Worthey fired because he thought the driver was the man from the argument. The victim had no connection to Worthey or the other man, according to Fitchburg police.
Police identified Worthey as a suspect and learned Sept. 8 that he lived in the 1600 block of Fordem Avenue. Fitchburg officers, Madison police SWAT officers and federal agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives searched the home. Police said they found multiple guns and firearm accessories and arrested Worthey on a probation violation. Because he is a convicted felon, he is prohibited from possessing firearms, police said.
Worthey is now charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide, second-degree recklessly endangering safety and possession of a firearm by a felon. Online court records show a judge set his cash bond at $200,000 on Oct. 19. He is scheduled for a status conference Nov. 9.
Police said community members and businesses helped the investigation by providing witness statements and camera footage.
