FAA approves $4.7 million plan to reduce airport noise in Dane County homes
Dane County Regional Airport will use $4.7 million in federal funding to prepare a sound-insulation program for eligible homes and businesses near the airport. The first phase will identify qualifying properties, measure indoor noise and develop costs for insulating about 10 units.
MADISON, Wis. — The Federal Aviation Administration has approved a sound-insulation program for qualified homes and businesses near Dane County Regional Airport, opening the way for federally funded noise-mitigation work around the airport.
The FAA grant provides $4.7 million for the program’s first phase. That money will support the planning, documentation and pre-construction work required before insulation projects can be carried out.
Dane County Regional Airport announced the approval about two months after the FAA approved the airport’s amended Noise Compatibility Program in July. The sound-insulation effort is part of that broader plan to address aircraft noise affecting nearby communities.
The initial phase will include developing an acoustic testing plan, confirming which properties meet federal eligibility requirements and contacting potentially eligible homeowners. Airport officials also plan to test interior noise levels at qualifying properties.
The airport expects to design and seek bids for work on about 10 eligible units during the planning phase. Those projects will help establish baseline costs per household, information needed to pursue additional federal funding for insulation improvements in more homes and businesses.
The program will not immediately begin construction across the eligible area. The airport first must hire a consulting partner and complete the required FAA processes. Once that partner is selected, airport officials said they will contact homeowners and explain how to participate.
