MADISON, Wis. — A driver died and a passenger was hospitalized after a vehicle caught fire in a crash early Friday on Madison’s east side, the Madison Fire Department said. Firefighters were called to the area of American Family Drive and American Parkway shortly before 12:40 a.m. They found the vehicle engulfed in flames with a person inside. After extinguishing the fire, crews determined that the driver had died. Firefighters also found a long trail of debris along the roadway, which the department said suggested the vehicle had been traveling at a high speed before the crash. Madison police located a passenger from the vehicle nearby. The passenger was transported by ambulance for treatment, and the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, according to the fire department. Authorities had not released the identities of the driver or passenger or additional information about what led to the crash.
