COTTAGE GROVE, Wis. — Cottage Grove officials are moving to end the village’s use of Flock Safety license-plate reader cameras, joining a growing list of Wisconsin communities reconsidering the technology. The Village Board voted Monday to terminate its contract with Flock Safety, a company that provides automated license-plate reader systems. The board approved a motion directing village staff to deactivate the cameras. If the cameras cannot be deactivated, the motion calls for them to be removed or covered so they cannot collect license-plate data. The board also directed village staff and the village attorney to draft an ordinance barring the village and its Police Department from purchasing, leasing, contracting for, installing or reactivating license-plate reader technology in the future. The decision comes as other Wisconsin communities take similar steps. Sun Prairie recently chose not to renew its Flock Safety contract, according to the village’s announcement. The cameras are designed to capture license plates and vehicle information, making the Cottage Grove board’s action both a public-safety and data-governance decision. The proposed ordinance would go beyond ending the current contract by preventing the village from bringing the technology back under a future agreement.
