Oldham County man released after posting $1.5 million bond in fatal hit-and-run case

An Oldham County man charged in a fatal hit-and-run was released from jail Thursday after posting his $1.5 million bond, according to court and jail information reported Oct. 15.

Jason Cornett, 55, is accused of striking Margaret Preble, 75, with his truck on U.S. 42 on Nov. 11, 2024, and leaving the scene. Prosecutors allege Cornett was intoxicated and that he and his girlfriend, Zoe Wolfe, attempted to cover up the crash.

Cornett faces charges of murder, leaving the scene and failing to render aid, tampering with physical evidence, and driving under the influence. The allegations have not been proven in court.

Prosecutors had set bond at $1.5 million. In September, they reportedly suspected Cornett was selling property to raise money for it. His full bond was posted Thursday morning.

Preble, who lived in La Grange, was found near the road after the crash. Her husband of 48 years, Laurence Preble, said she had gone for a walk and never returned. “I never got to say goodbye. It was so unexpected,” he said after her death.

Cornett and Wolfe were arrested. Police said Wolfe drove the truck out of Oldham County the day after the crash; investigators found it two days after the collision at an auto repair shop in Corbin, about two and a half hours south. Wolfe is charged with tampering with physical evidence, and her trial is scheduled for January.

Cornett’s defense team has sought to move his trial out of Oldham County. No trial date for him was included in the available case update.
