Louisville police name three officers in fatal Phillips Lane motel standoff

The Louisville Metro Police Department has identified three officers involved in a fatal exchange of gunfire during a SWAT standoff at a Motel 6 on Phillips Lane last week.

The incident began Thursday night, Oct. 15, when officers responded to a report of domestic violence involving gunfire on Parthenia Avenue. Police said officers pursued a suspect to the motel, where he opened fire on officers and SWAT. Three officers returned fire, and the man retreated into a motel room.

Police later found the man dead. He had injuries from the exchange of gunfire and an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the department. Authorities have not released his identity.

The officers were identified as Treyton Brown, Richard Waller and Jackson Evans. Brown has served with LMPD for one year, Waller for nearly four years and Evans for seven years.

LMPD records show Evans and Waller were previously involved in police shootings. The department’s Professional Standards Unit exonerated both officers in those cases, according to the records.

The department is expected to release additional information about the incident within 10 business days.
