Louisville Metro Police identified Officer Brian Thompson as the officer who shot a 15-year-old boy in Okolona on Monday, Oct. 5. The department said it expects to release body-camera footage within 10 business days.
Police were called to the 3700 block of Cutler Road around 4 p.m. after receiving a report that a mother had been injured by her son. Officers spoke with the mother, and police said the teenager then arrived with a rifle and fired toward her and an officer.
According to LMPD, the officer moved the mother to safety and ordered the teen to drop the rifle. Police said the boy fired again, and the officer returned fire, striking him several times.
The officer rendered aid before the teenager was taken to a hospital. He underwent surgery Monday night. Police had not provided an update on his condition as of Wednesday, Oct. 7.
Thompson, a member of LMPD’s Seventh Division, joined the department in 2023. He has been placed on administrative leave while the department’s Public Integrity Unit investigates the shooting.
LMPD also released Thompson’s commendation letters and records of a March 2024 incident. He received an oral reprimand for violating department procedures related to prejudice and citizen-stop reports and was required to enroll in Professionalism Training.
