Colin Kaepernick to Receive Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Award in Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick will be in Louisville on Saturday night to accept the Muhammad Ali Center's Humanitarian of the Year award, recognizing his advocacy on racial injustice and his work with underserved communities.

Kaepernick, who played six seasons in the NFL, primarily with the San Francisco 49ers, became a national figure in 2016 when he knelt during the national anthem before games to protest racial injustice and police brutality. The demonstrations ignited a widespread debate and drew both support and sharp criticism. He has not played in the league since that season.

The Muhammad Ali Center cited Kaepernick's efforts addressing racial injustice and supporting marginalized communities in announcing the honor. The award will be presented during the center's 13th annual ceremony, held Saturday evening at the Muhammad Ali Center in downtown Louisville.

The event will also honor Louisville philanthropists Steve and Amy Trager with the Kentucky Humanitarian Award. Six changemakers age 30 or younger will be recognized for their work in accessibility, technology, environmental sustainability and refugee support.

The ceremony comes as the Ali Center continues its mission of promoting social responsibility and global citizenship, values embodied by the late boxing champion and activist. Kaepernick's recognition places him alongside past honorees who have used their platforms to push for social change.
