LOS ANGELES — At least three people were killed Tuesday when a helicopter crashed into a parking lot in Chatsworth, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. One other person was taken to a hospital, but officials had not released that person’s condition. Fire officials were still determining how many victims had been aboard the helicopter and whether all of those killed were on the aircraft. At least one person died outside the helicopter in the parking lot, Capt. Branden Silverman, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson, said at a news conference. The aircraft struck or came down near parked vehicles at a lot serving a large, one-story building. Officials had not immediately identified the business at the site. More than 50 firefighters responded. The crash ignited a fire that damaged four vehicles and two storage containers, but the flames had been extinguished by Tuesday evening. Silverman said the helicopter was “pretty well destroyed,” and investigators would need to search through the wreckage to determine the final number of victims. The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are expected to investigate the cause of the crash. Officials had not announced what type of helicopter was involved or provided details about its flight before it went down. The helicopter crash followed a separate serious traffic collision in Los Angeles earlier Tuesday. An SUV struck a city bus, killing two people and injuring six others, officials said. Images from that scene showed roughly half of the SUV embedded in the side of an MTA bus as emergency crews worked around the vehicle. The two crashes brought a heavy emergency response to different parts of the city on the same day, while investigators continued working to establish what led to each incident.
