New York City to enroll more than 10,000 families in child care voucher program
NEW YORK — More than 10,000 New York City families waiting for help with child care costs will receive vouchers, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Monday, Oct. 5. The families will be moved off the waitlist for the state Child Care Assistance Program, which subsidizes care for low- and middle-income households. The program covers children from 6 weeks old through age 13, as well as older children with disabilities. The expansion is supported by $1.2 billion that Gov. Kathy Hochul included for child care in the state budget earlier this year. That funding includes $475 million specifically for child care vouchers, which the city is required to match. Mamdani cast the move as part of his effort to make child care broadly available, rejecting critics who, he said, oppose treating “universal child care as a public good.” The announcement promises relief for thousands of families who have been waiting for assistance with child care expenses. The available details did not specify when each family will receive a voucher.
