Henderson crash on Horizon Ridge Parkway leaves passenger dead, driver critically injured
A single-vehicle collision early Sunday at Horizon Ridge Parkway and Shaded Canyon Drive killed one person and sent another to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police suspect speed and impairment were factors.
A passenger was killed and a driver was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after a vehicle struck a light pole in Henderson early Sunday morning, according to the Henderson Police Department.
Police and the Henderson Fire Department were called to the intersection of Horizon Ridge Parkway and Shaded Canyon Drive at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday, the department said in a statement. The vehicle had two occupants when it hit the pole.
The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver was taken to a hospital with injuries described as life-threatening.
Investigators said they suspect speed and impairment contributed to the crash. The department did not release the names of the people involved, and the investigation is ongoing.
The location is a stretch of Horizon Ridge Parkway on Henderson's southern edge, near residential neighborhoods and a shopping center. The early-morning hour and the involvement of a fixed roadside object are common factors in severe single-vehicle crashes, though police have not said how fast the vehicle was traveling or what impairment they suspect.
Fatal crashes have been a recurring concern in Henderson in recent weeks. A motorcyclist was killed Wednesday night after crashing and being struck by another vehicle, and a Henderson man was identified after a fatal October crash near Interstate 11 and College Drive. The city's police department has also been expanding its ranks, graduating its largest academy class in history earlier this month.
Anyone with information about Sunday's crash is asked to contact the Henderson Police Department.
