Jaime West faces scrutiny after heated remarks at Fayette County candidate forum
The Democratic county council candidate said she would fire Republicans if elected and closed a televised forum segment with, “We have guns, too.” Her comments about a possible Connersville fire station closure were disputed by the fire chief.
Jaime West, a Democratic candidate for Fayette County Council, drew widespread attention after a televised candidate forum Oct. 9 in Connersville, where she criticized Republicans and said she would fire them from county government if elected.
Asked to name a policy she might pursue that would be unpopular, West replied, “Firing all Republicans.” She later qualified the remark, saying there were “good Republicans” but that she disliked being around “MAGA” Republicans, whom she called racist and unintelligent. At the end of her segment, asked for a final message to voters, she said: “We have guns, too.”
West said during the 10-minute appearance that people across the political aisle had threatened her. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office could not confirm whether she had reported threats to law enforcement.
The forum also included a dispute over the future of a local fire station. West became emotional while arguing that Indiana’s property-tax limits, enacted through Senate Bill 1 last year, could contribute to the station’s closure. She said she had spoken with Connersville Fire Department Chief Scott Jones. Jones responded in a Facebook post Oct. 12 that no Connersville fire stations would close and that he had no affiliation with West or the Democratic Party.
West also criticized data centers, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and state wheel taxes during the forum. She owns Queen Bee’s Cleaning, which is listed as active with the Indiana Secretary of State.
West is challenging Republican Gary Keener Jr. for the District 4 seat on the county council in the Nov. 3 general election. Keener submitted a written statement to the forum rather than appearing on air. West’s campaign had not responded to a request for comment by the time of publication.
