Indianapolis man charged in deaths of mother and stepfather

An Indianapolis man has been charged with murder in the deaths of his mother and stepfather at their home on Lakeshire Lane, according to court records.

David White, 38, was charged Wednesday with two counts of murder and one count of attempted battery with a deadly weapon. He appeared in court Thursday for an initial hearing and was being held without bond at the Marion County jail. A next court date had not been set.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers went to the home Sunday afternoon after a 911 caller reported an assault in the driveway. Robert Pottle Jr., 80, was found outside with severe injuries and later died at a hospital. His wife, Cynthia Pottle, 75, was found inside and pronounced dead at the scene.

According to court records, a witness told investigators he saw White striking Robert Pottle with a shovel and tried to intervene. The witness said White later returned with a knife and stabbed Pottle. Police also reported finding weapons at the scene.

Investigators said White’s half-sister told them family members had become increasingly concerned about his behavior in recent months. Court documents say he had stopped taking medication, declined to complete a mental health evaluation ordered by a Hamilton County court, and believed his parents were keeping him at the house against his will and poisoning him through a new heating and cooling system.

A text message recovered from Robert Pottle’s phone showed Cynthia Pottle had asked him to come home around noon Sunday because she was concerned about White, according to court records.

The charges are allegations, and White is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
