Indiana flood survivors have until Oct. 25 to seek federal disaster aid
Hoosiers whose homes or lives were affected by August’s storms and historic flooding have until Oct. 25 to apply for federal disaster assistance, state officials say. The storms left hundreds of thousands of people without power and brought severe flooding to communities along the White River. Anderson, Noblesville, Carmel and Indianapolis were among the hardest-hit areas. A federal disaster declaration made residents in 24 counties eligible to seek individual assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. More than 60,000 Hoosiers have applied, and FEMA has awarded more than $142 million in disaster relief, according to figures reported by state officials. Total storm damage is expected to approach $1 billion, said Jonathan Whitham, executive director of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. Crews have also removed more than 80,000 cubic yards of debris across dozens of communities. Indiana has hired disaster services company Tidal Basin to contact people who remain displaced from their homes. State officials expect some survivors have not yet applied for help. People can apply at DisasterAssistance.gov, call FEMA at 1-800-621-3362 or visit an in-person application site listed on the Indiana Department of Homeland Security’s August 2026 disaster page. The deadline to apply is Oct. 25.
