Trump’s Oklahoma rally brings rare presidential visit to Choctaw Nation
President Donald Trump held a campaign rally Oct. 1 in Durant, on Choctaw Nation land, joining a small group of presidents who have visited a tribal reservation while in office. The tribe rented its events center for the event but said it did not sponsor the rally.
DURANT, Okla. — President Donald Trump brought his campaign push for Republican candidates to the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma on Oct. 1, holding a rally in Durant that marked a rare presidential visit to tribal land.
The stop was part of Trump’s effort to support Republicans and promote his agenda ahead of November’s midterm elections. Its historic setting appeared to be incidental: Republican National Committee spokesperson Zach Kraft said Durant was selected because it is close to Texas, which is important to Trump’s political itinerary.
Trump praised Choctaw Principal Chief Gary Batton, who stood beside Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, a member of the Cherokee Nation. Trump also cited what he described as the lowest poverty rate in decades for Americans, including Native people. Recent Census Bureau figures support that claim under one measure, though experts say a broader measure of poverty is not at a record low.
The Choctaw Nation rented its events center for the rally but did not sponsor it, the tribe said. Trump said he had met with tribal representatives before speaking. A tribal spokesperson said later that day Batton had not yet issued a response to the visit.
The visit adds to a short list of sitting U.S. presidents who have gone to tribal reservations. Trump previously visited the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina during the final stretch of the 2020 campaign and supported its bid for federal recognition, which he signed into law in 2025.
The rally’s location offered a backdrop of tribal sovereignty and community presence, even as the campaign’s stated reason for choosing Durant was electoral geography. Trump said he wanted Oklahoma and Texas to remain Republican strongholds.
