Pueblo County voters told to check with elections office after duplicate district ballots mailed
Some Pueblo County residents received duplicate ballots containing only questions about special tax districts. Election officials say voters should contact the county for guidance, and that safeguards are in place to prevent people from casting more than one vote on district measures.
Some Pueblo County residents received an extra ballot ahead of the November election, with the duplicate ballot limited to questions about special tax districts, county election officials said Oct. 12.
County Clerk Deanna Kendall urged anyone who received two ballots to contact the Election Department for instructions. The county clerk’s office said it did not cause the mailing and attributed the problem to inaccurate voter lists submitted by groups responsible for special tax initiatives.
Those groups are contractually responsible for checking and certifying registered-voter lists before submitting them to the Election Department, the office said in a statement.
Kendall said most of the extra ballots went to people in the Rye Fire District. But receiving two ballots is not necessarily a mistake: someone who lives outside a district but owns property inside it may be eligible to receive ballots connected to both their residence and property.
Pueblo County Elections Director Daniel Lepick said the practice of mailing separate ballots to people who live outside a tax district is new. He said the department has a process to verify that voters and property owners cast only one vote on questions in those districts.
The county has not publicly specified how many people received duplicate ballots. Voters unsure whether they have an extra ballot should contact the Election Department before voting.
